How to make your workplace more collaborative

Shayna Finkelstein, Advoz summer communications intern

Building a collaborative workplace takes more than shared goals and good intentions. It requires a culture where people feel comfortable communicating openly, addressing concerns respectfully, and learning from feedback at every level of the organization. By encouraging honest conversations, creating clear pathways for conflict resolution, and remaining open to constructive criticism, teams can strengthen relationships, reduce workplace tensions, and create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.

Encourage open conversation and transparency

Regardless of what form of mediation you are talking about, they all share at least one thing: communication is key. Without a foundation of honesty, solving even the smallest problems can be more trouble than it’s worth. But if you get in the practice of sharing feedback and insights around, those strategies will be second nature by the time you really need them. So start practicing now (or as soon as you finish reading this) and encourage the others around you to do the same.

Create systems for formalized conversation when needed

Let’s be real here: discussion can’t solve every problem. It can do more than a lot of people give it credit for, but sitting down to share perspectives with someone won’t always end conflicts. So, in order to supplement the mediation strategies you are already working on, create some kind of system for people to resolve conflicts peacefully. It doesn’t need to be flashy, and it doesn’t even necessarily have to be formal. But creating a system for addressing grievances will give everyone the chance to be heard, regardless of where they stand on a conflict.

Recognize issues at every level—leave no one above reproach

This one might be the hardest to implement, but it’s probably the most important. Seniority doesn’t make someone infallible. Age can’t equal immunity. Everyone’s got a story of a supervisor that annoyed them, or rubbed them the wrong way, or whose leadership style made things harder for everyone. And guess what? That could be you. If someone tells you you’re not approaching things effectively, your instinct is probably to bristle, defend yourself, or maybe attack their argument. Even if they’re easier, those reactions aren’t helping anyone. Instead, if you can teach yourself to really listen to feedback, people will feel more comfortable coming to you. You’ll build a workplace where people feel like they can share their ideas. And, in time, everyone benefits from a system like that.
