Life Learning as an Advoz Intern – Kaylee Geesey

Apr 30, 2024 | News, Volunteers

Kaylee Geesey interned with Advoz in the spring of 2024 in conjunction with Millersville University’s Social Work program.

As I reflect on the time spent with Advoz, I am filled with gratitude and humbled at the growth I have seen in myself. I am the first person in my family to go to college, and being an intern was a new experience for me. From the first week of my internship, I attended trainings, which honestly, was more intensive than I expected. Looking back, these training sessions were the most stretching, but also the most rewarding aspect of my internship experience.

I remember when I first walked into the Conflict, Communication, and Culture training, not knowing what to expect. There were many individuals that were older than me, and, quite frankly, wiser than me. They had experience and different, unique backgrounds, and I felt like I would not measure up. However, as I learned more about my own personal conflict styles and opened up about my weaknesses when it came to conflict, these individuals were there to listen and encourage me. I felt heard in a space that was unfamiliar to me and felt comfortable sharing my experience without being judged or belittled. It was like this throughout all of the trainings. These strangers became friends over a short period of time.

Not only did these trainings offer community and educate me on what it is that Advoz does, I also saw a growth in myself, both personally and professionally. Because these trainings were stretching, I am now much more confident in my own abilities and realize that I should not sell myself short. I am much more capable of doing hard things than I once thought.

Besides the personal growth, I grew professionally as well, strengthening and developing new skills. Between improving communication skills and time management, I also learned new software like WordPress, which is where I designed the Mediator and Facilitator Bio Webpage, which was the project focus on my semester. I took great pleasure in writing each bio, getting to know the wonderful people behind the work of Advoz. I am beyond appreciative for the opportunity to work with welcoming and knowledgeable staff members, in addition to the personal and professional growth I have seen within myself.
